Poverty is not only a lack of income

Amartya Sen defines poverty as a lack of basic capabilities to lead the kind of life one values. Poverty should therefore not be seen only in financial terms. Poverty has three dimensions: poverty of income and productive assets, poverty of access to essential services, and poverty of power, participation and respect. Deprived of these essential attributes, people will not be able to realize their full capabilities, and therefore will not be able to benefit from, contribute to and have an influence on development.

  1. Yes, it is true that Poverty is not only a lack of Income rather it encompasses resulting to different sources.

  2. poverty of power, participation and respect…….nice words. May be I am biased but I couldn’t help to relate these words to the fairer sex. Especially now a days women are bluntly being denied to feel rich (having power, participation and respect) in our country. Poverty (monitory) is a phenomena devoid of gender but if I consider this particular definition of poverty, definitely one gender is poorer than the other.
